Knowing how to level texts is a very important skill to have as an effective teacher.
I'll quickly explain. In our own future classroom libraries, we
will have to do this ourselves. Personally, I plan to have a
classroom library filled with all of the books I have collected since the
beginning of college. Those are many, many books unleveled. Secondly, and mainly, understanding how books
are leveled gives us the insight needed so that we are able to
analytically look at a text for developmental appropriateness for each of
our students. Each child is different and has their own strengths
and needs. By understanding and knowing every child, this is how an
effective and great teacher reaches each one of them and positively pushes
their development. Thirdly, we as the
teachers, can even write our own leveled mentor texts! Students love this and research supports it! More on mentor texts later…
